Smokey Eyes; NYC Custom Compact Product Review

20 Oct

I was presented with NYC NewYorkColor Individual Eyes Custom Compact in “Dark Shadows” to offer up my review to you, dear reader. I have a background in theatrical make-up and, well, being a girl who likes to be in front of a camera, I’ve managed to stay on top of my skills.

The Basics: This compact includes four individual eye shadow colours, a base/primer, an illuminator, and a two ended foam applicator.

The Price: Less than $5

The Colours: Bright white, silver, medium grey, and soft black.

First Impression: The compact packaging is very efficent. No frills and very straight forward, but appealing. The colours look as though they are best suited to be used to create a dark smokey eye. The shadows appear to be very pigmented in the package. All the eye shadows have a light shimmer to them, the illuminator appears to be a white/clear cream with a very fine glitter, and the base looks a lot like a nude coloured concealer.

Dark Shadows NYC

The Application Process:
First: Primer to my whole lid and blended up towards my eyebrow.
Second: Illuminator was applied right below my eyebrow and to the inner corner of my eye.
Third: The Shadows – I applied the silver shadow to my whole lid and blended upwards towards the brow. The dark grey to the whole crease, middle of the lid, and the lower lash line. The black to the outer corner blending upward and out, and to the outer third of the upper and lower lash lines. Lastly the white to the inner corner of my eye and below the eyebrow. I followed up with black liner and mascara.

My Take: I  was a little disappointed in the pigmentation of the shadows. They were not nearly as rich as they appeared or I had hoped for. Even with a lot of layering, I was unable to achieve the desired effect when using these items alone. There was A LOT of shimmer, which is not my usual look. However, if you do like shimmer, these were great.  I don’t care much for the illuminator or the base. Both of them made my eye lids feel greasy. There were no instructions on how to use either of these, and for someone who doesn’t know, that might be confusing. I applied the products in the morning with my normal routine, within 2 hours I was experiencing creasing and displacement. The black was more of a dark grey asphalt once on and having deep set eyes anyway, it gave the appearance of having a black eye. I attempted this look again without the illuminator and my own primer, with somewhat better results. Individually, I like the white and the dark grey shades and have worn them since. My colouring was not the best for these shadows, and I would not have chosen them for myself. I have used NYC eye shadows before with great success.

I hope this review was helpful, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I will be providing more product reviews in the very near future.

Frankenblog

20 Jul

Dearest Readers,

With so very many things, as always, going on, I have been downright neglectful of this blog. It’s not that I have lost my love of sharing what’s going on, and anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I will strike up a conversation with nearly anyone at the drop of a hat*.

*Please do not drop perfectly fine vintage hats just to talk to me. If I don’t speak first, you just say hello. Deal?

So, I keep doing that thing where I try to decide if I should make a whole new blog and wash my hands of this one and make an individual blog for each thing I have going on, but in the last 10 minutes I have decided that scrapping one in favor of 3 will only lead to my being institutionalized. So below is a list of things you can expect to see here from now on.

  • Regular Posts from your friendly neighborhood vintage gal including Outfits of the Day,  tutorials, recipes, and picture heavy posts chronicling  my local, and hopefully far off, adventures .  (I’ve actually made a reminder in my iPhone calendar with alarms and all to see to it that these get done on the reg.)
  • Updating the Reel Roll with movies and TV shows that I’ve viewed and think may be of interest to at least one person.
  • Insanity. The workout, not my state of mind. I’m currently on my 4th day of it. I’ll likely randomly update about this too.
  • News about The Atomic Squirrel including sales and awesome finds that you should really go ogle at.
  • I’m getting Married! I know I announced that back when we got engaged. We are in the planning phase now and I want to share just what an awesome experience that is!

So that’s it really. I’m off to take care of a few errands and if I’m lucky, get to photograph some places I’ve been meaning to. If any of this things appeal to you, subscribe, bookmark, and check back often. Your “likes”, shares, pins, stars and comments encourage me to keep writing with purpose!

The Atomic Squirrel

The Atomic Squirrel

For those of you who know me in real life, you know that having my own business dealing in “the vintage lifestyle” has been a dream of mine for quite sometime. Today I am one very large step closer to that dream blooming in full. After about a year running my etsy shop under my handle as Candii Hearts, and that entire time knowing that for certain that was not the name I wanted my company to live with for the rest of my life. I wanted something expressly me, and there isn’t a soul who would argue the fact that if I were to be a small woodland creature, it would definitely be a squirrel.

So combining my love for the atomic era and my “spirit animal” was not nearly as simple as it should have been. There were lots of factors to consider and I imagine it is a stress similar to naming your child. I sat down this weekend and put together my logo, painted my store sign (see above), updated the store, sent out emails and am still taking care of some of the smaller, more tedious tasks.

Right now I’m working on stamps, labels and shirts (which will be for sale).

Exclusive Sales? Yes please!

I had a fantastic yesterday from start to finish!

Early morning I got to have some wonderful conversation. From the time I fell asleep to the time I woke up I had amazing dreams and felt so safe. After running a couple of errands around town, I headed to JC and went book shopping. I was looking for a specific nifty retro embroidery book…but I didn’t find it. I did however come away with a couple of reprinted Hard Case crime books and a cookbook “Hostess with the Mostess” that is FULL of retro recipes (and pics) that I cant wait to try out! Now… I just need someone to let me cook! lol! Yesterday evening I got to have dinner with Jamie and Chelsea. Then Starbucks with the gang. Followed by Tv and girl talk with Chelsea. I got to see everyone I care about that lives around here 🙂 Spending time with the people I love makes me extremely happy!!
