Today I Am Thankful For

5 Nov

I noticed on various social media sites that people are listing what they are thankful for each day in November. I try to regularly write a post of things I am thankful for throughout the year to remind myself of the wonderful things I have in my life. I’ve decided for the month of November to post a few days at a time…so, without further adieu….

I’m thankful for…
1. The fact that I wake up every morning (sometimes in the afternoon, and especially thankful that I get to sleep in!).

2. My Parents. They are such a shining light for me. I’ve watched them tough it out, and I’ve watched them prosper, and through every step I’ve watched them show true, unconditional LOVE for one another. They have given me, and still do, so very very much. I cannot thank them enough for everything.

2a. My Daddy-O. He’s the best for telling me to chin-up and keep on. He will not stand for me giving less than what he knows I can. An entrepreneur himself, he’s great for giving advice and encouragement when I need it, even when I don’t realize I do. He’s a wonderful teacher, has great stories, and is a blast to sit back and have a drink with. His laugh is one of my favorite things ever, and I really miss hearing it since I moved away from home.

2b. My Momma. She is such a beautiful person through and through. I couldn’t possibly ask for a better person to show me how to overcome my fear, find my inner “happy place” (woosaaahhhh), teach me to be curious and show me through example how to be a true lady. My love of art most definitely comes from my mother’s passion and encouraging me to create and be expressive, that’s such an big part of who I am, and I have her to thank.

3. My brother going to school at my Alma Mater. I’ve got several years on him, so it’s almost like we are only children sometimes. By the time he was big enough to hang out (and didn’t interfere with my curfew) I had moved off. I still live near my college and we try to hang on the reg. He’s a pretty cool guy…but awesomeness is a family trait.

4. Thomas. My absolute best friend. My adventure partner. He is amazing. I’m so thankful for the friendship that we had for years prior to us dating, the prodding from friends who “just knew”, and his persistence. I am so blessed to call him family and cannot wait to be his bride. My everyday is made better by his presence in my life. ❤

5. My privilege as an American citizen to vote. I early voted, but if you have yet to hit the polls, I encourage you to cast an educated ballot tomorrow for the candidate of your choice and take the time to realize what a GREAT BIG DEAL that is!

I hope you take the time to remember things you are thankful for every day, not just in the month of November. I'm looking forward to sharing more with you as the month progresses!

Today I am Thankful For

18 Sep

Its “early” and there’s still quite a lot of day left to find more things.

Today I am Thankful for

•Rain – It’s been raining for what feels like 2 days, but I know we need it. (Related: I need a pair of Wellingtons.)

•New Friends- Carrie, I hope we grow closer and our friendship stronger. I look forward to us becoming lifelong friends.

•My wonderful Fiancé- It’s the little things you do that make my day shine and my heart happy. I can’t wait to embark upon new adventures with you. You are my true love and best friend.

•My Friend Sunny- We’ve toughed it out, been side kicks and accomplices, shoulders on which to cry and personal cheerleaders for quite sometime. I look forward to the future journal entries I can’t show to my kids.

•The Dishwasher- Enough said.

A new year, a new beginning

13 Jan

We are half way into January and many people I know are fumbling through their resolutions. This is why I don’t usually commit myself to such things. However, this year, I have decided to make a few. They are more of a lifestyle change as opposed to a resolution to be broken.

• Find a true focus for my blog.
-I dabble in a bit of this and a bit of that. I’ve not quite nailed down “my place” in the blogosphere. I love the vintage life, but I’m always excited to share my knowledge on many topics. Either way, I would like to blog on a schedule. We’ll see.

• Create.
– I am an artist at heart. My interests in art are quite varied and constantly changing. Vintage is an art, and one of my passions, but I paint, sew, craft, write, cook & bake, take photos….and I’m sure a few other things. I seem, however, to neglect actually finishing most projects I begin, leaving a trail behind me as something new catches my eye. I want to complete something and feel the thrill of that accomplishment.

• Be healthy.
– Yes, this hopefully will result in weight loss, as my weight is currently unhealthy for my height. (According to IBW scale I should be around 98-112lbs…I laugh) But essentially, it’s just go to the gym, have a set sleeping schedule & watching my portions. I have a bodymedia armband, and when I was using it I LOVED it. I’ll try to get a post out this weekend on that.

• Take more photo & get prints.
– I thoroughly enjoy photography, yet I neglect to frame any, they just live as memories on my computer. I want to surround myself with images of the people and life I love.

I think those are all reasonable and attainable. In the coming months, I’ll update as to my progress.

My Goliath

27 Apr

First thing’s first: I PASSED MY RRT!!! For those of you who are not in the know, which will be many, I am a Respiratory Therapist. There are two levels; Certified and Registered. I’ve been certified pretty much since I graduated college. I have struggled with debilitating test anxiety for years. It came close to keeping me from graduating from college all together. But, indeed, three years ago I crossed the stage at East Tennessee State University to receive my diploma of six years of hard work. I graduated with a degree in Clinical and Rehabilitative Science with a concentration in Cardio-Pulmonary Science. Post graduation, to get the to the status of Registered Respiratory Therapist, you must master three exams. A daunting task for anyone, and especially for me who just about passed out signing up for my last exam, just at the thought of taking it. It was made worse by the compounded knowledge that I not only knew and understood the information, but that I had previously attempted this last test and failed by no more than 7 points. That documented failure has hung over my head for a year and taunted me every time I attempted to prepare to take it again. I dug in, preparing for the TEST, as opposed to the information that would be on it. Clearly this is the strategy that I should have been using my whole life. Better to find out now as opposed to never. The idea of sitting for additional boards doesn’t distress me so any longer.
I hope that this reaches someone who also has a similar problem and they realize that this is something that can be overcome. Do tests make me nervous still? I’m not yet sure, I’m still on a high from passing my exam. Beating an ultimate fear of mine and, well, proving to myself that I can do this!

20 Oct

Throughout the day, I usually stop to remind myself of what it is that I am thankful for. Of course there are the big ones like “I woke up this morning”, but it is so easy to overlook and take fore granted the little things that we grow so accustomed to. I am going to attempt to make a point to regularly jot down the things that I am thankful for in hopes that I remind myself, and maybe you dear reader, that even the smallest of things are important in making us who we are.

Today, I am thankful for:

Good coffee

Cool crisp Autumn air

Getting kisses from Thomas when I woke up

My “new” car

Conversations with my understanding friend Kat

These really awesome retro chairs

My down comforter
